TIM L58: Thermal Interface Material Tester
The LINSEIS TIM L58 is an advanced thermal interface material tester developed for the precise measurement of thermal impedance and apparent thermal conductivity in liquids, thermal greases, phase change materials, solders, pads, resilient thermal conductors, and solid materials. Designed according to ASTM D5470, the system provides reliable, accurate, and fully automated thermal characterization for thermal management applications in batteries, electronics, semiconductor packaging, and high-power devices where efficient heat dissipation and thermal runaway protection are critical.
The TIM L58 features automatic pressure adjustment up to 10 MPa, integrated high-resolution LVDT thickness determination, and fully software-controlled operation with real-time parameter recording. Its flexible sample holder design supports different sample sizes and geometries, while interchangeable meter bars allow optimization for different thermal impedance ranges and temperature conditions. With operation up to 300 °C and wide pressure and temperature control capabilities, the system delivers high-precision, stable, and reproducible measurements, making it an ideal solution for research, development, and quality control of modern thermal interface materials.

Measuring principle
A sample is positioned between a hot and a cold meter bar, where the hot meter bar is connected to a regulated heating stage and the cold meter bar is connected to a thermostatically-controlled, liquid-cooled heat sink. The contact pressure on the sample can be automatically adjusted with an integrated electric actuator, ensuring stable pressure conditions over temperature. The sample thickness can either be entered manually or measured and controlled using an integrated sensor.
The heat flux through the sample is measured using multiple temperature sensors positioned at a known distance inside each meter bar. The thermal impedance is determined from the temperature drop across the sample material using its geometry for calculation. For determining the apparent thermal conductivity, the thermal impedance of single or multilayer specimens can be plotted against sample thickness, enabling precise and reliable thermal characterization.
